Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of shaping content so generative search systems — Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Copilot — select it as a source and cite it in synthesized answers.

As AI answers replace traditional blue-link clicks, being cited is the new front page.

Generative engines retrieve candidate passages, then re-rank them for citation. Signals include:

• Passage-level clarity and self-containment.
• Factual density with verifiable claims.
• Entity and topic alignment with the query.
• Source authority and freshness.

Ranking rewards the whole page; citation rewards a single extractable passage. A page can rank #7 and still be the source AI cites if a paragraph delivers a crisp, quotable answer.

• Lead each section with a direct one-sentence answer.
• Use bullet lists, tables and definition lists.
• Attribute numbers and claims to sources.
• Keep paragraphs short (2-4 sentences).

Write each H2 as a plain question or noun phrase the model can retrieve on. Follow it immediately with the answer — don't bury it under intros.

Use your brand name consistently, link to your entity home page, and pair the brand with descriptive nouns ('Eternity, an AI marketing automation platform') so the model bonds identity to category.

Track citations in Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews using tools like Otterly, Peec.ai, or manual query panels. Log which URLs and passages get referenced.
